Calcium fluoride (CaF2) is a relatively hard material, which is mostly used to make optical windows, lenses and prisms in the ultraviolet to infrared range. Naturally mined fluorite is used to grow a large amount of calcium fluoride material at a relatively low cost, mainly for infrared rays. Chemically prepared calcium fluoride materials are commonly used for UV applications. Calcium fluoride material is resistant to high temperatures. Under normal conditions, it begins to soften until the temperature rises to 600°C. Under dry conditions, its maximum working temperature is 800°C. IR Caf2 lens and window are mainly used in astronomy, photography, microscopes, high-definition television optics and medical laser instruments.
